seas of the moon

When early astronomers gazed upon the moon, they thought the patterns on its surface to be seas, lakes, and even oceans. When I look at the moon at night I am enchanted by the idea of waves crashing on unknown and distant shores, about the known and unknown. These astronomers, unable to realize that there wasn't even a drop of water on the moon, named these "seas" such imaginative names, that I have designed this collection around the Seas on the Moon.

Each necklace varies slightly in size but they are all about 70mm long x 65mm, they're not heavy but they are quite large pendants. They each have a handmade clasp and soldered jump rings along the chain so they can be worn at any length between 39.5cm and 52.5cm  (15 1/2 inches and 20 1/2 inches).

crashed

My laptop has been away at the repair shop for two weeks now and it looks like it may not be repairable :(.  This coincided with me getting bitten by a particularly nasty little tick which injected me with it's poison and made me very ill.  I'm finally out of bed and feeling better and I have a temporary computer to work on ... so things are slowly returning to normal.  I can finally get back to working on the necklaces I've been making, I'll have some pictures here soon.  Have a wonderful weekend everyone!  xx

looking forward

Since making jewellery I have always wanted to share the inspiration for pieces, usually with a photograph.

I have always been passionate about photography and have enjoyed using my photos to share the inspirations behind my jewellery collections. Over the years this has naturally led me to improve my skills as a photographer, to the point where I feel honoured to have won a few prizes this year in a local photography exhibition, and have recently been asked by Getty Images for quite a number of my photos to be part of their world renowned collection of photographic images.

So I feel happy now to list my photographs in my Etsy shop. My first printed work will be a calendar for 2013 featuring a collection of images that represent me and my inspirations.

The calendar is printed on high quality matte 350gsm card; the paper is from a certified sustainable forest. Each page measures 21cm x 14.8cm (8.3 x 5.8 inches), size A5. The pages are held together by a silver hinged ring with a tied linen ribbon, ready to attach to the wall. The ribbon has a branch with little birds sitting on it and “life is beautiful” printed on it.

They're available in my Etsy store now.

the land

While standing on a ridge on a mountain range in New Zealand I was overwhelmed by the monumental landscape and that feeling of being a very small part of it. That moment became the inspiration for this small collection of rings about "the land".

Each ring has a little mountain range soldered to the back of it with the sun rising in the first ring, then moving across the sky and setting in the final ring.

Midday Sun
Size 8 3/4

Afternoon Light

Sunset

The rings will be in my Etsy store later today, or if you'd like to reserve one just send me a convo or an email.  The ring bands are very wide (17mm) so they're a tight fit, they will be comfortable if your finger is a half to a full size smaller than the ring size.

The Seal Pups of Ohau Stream

One of the most amazing things I experienced while on holiday in New Zealand were these little six month old seal pups.

They are the cutest little things, but what is truly amazing about them is the journey they make up the Ohau stream. They swim, they clamber over difficult rocks, and they waddle along bits of a track beside you for about half a kilometre (it's a long way on flippers!) until the reach their destination.

As you turn the final corner of the walk you get to see why they make such an effort. Pouring out from between the mountains is a waterfall, with a perfect little pool beneath it. And there in the pool all the baby seal pups are jumping in and out and underneath the water that is swirling around. They go all this way, just to play.

The pups play in the stream while their mothers are out hunting in the ocean. After a few days they waddle, clamber and swim back to the coast to meet their mothers returning from hunting. Then the wee seal pups feed on their rich mother’s milk.

I can’t describe the feeling of seeing this incredible display of nature - it brought tears to my eyes.
